August 31 - Sept. 4, 2015

Word of the Week: Character is the word for the first seven days of school. To begin our study of character, we should start with this question, “Why do schools teach character?”

Our answer begins with research from Dr. Martin Seligman (University of Pennsylvania) and Dr. Chris Peterson (University of Michigan). Their research identified 24 character strengths as leading to engaged, meaningful, and purposeful lives. Our school follows a program started from KIPP Schools that narrowed those 24 strengths into 7 main character strengths. We believe that students that learn about these character skills have a better opportunity to be successful in school and in life. In short, this is why we study character at CCMS.
